Go out the south exit of JR Kobe Station and down the escalator, and find yourself in Duo Dome, an atrium-style plaza. This is the entrance to TRANS- and the first of Gregor Schneider’s 12 Stations. Elderly Kobe residents are invited to a special booth, where they are photographed with a high-precision 3D scanner and the data transformed into a 3D avatar (a total of 1,000 people are scheduled to participate during the exhibition). These virtual husks of people drift through the air like ghosts, and then reappear at the 12th and final station. The journey through Schneider’s work, in which life and death, inside and outside, present and past trade places without warning, begins here.
